Artist Elizabeth Sutton opens gallery and retail experience

artist elizabeth sutton A true pioneer. While many new artists struggle to make a living from their art alone, Sutton’s approach and her unique aesthetic allowed her to truly shine. Although her heart has always been in painting, she has licensed everything from kitchen and bathroom tiles in collaboration with TileBar, to rugs with Rugs America, to office chairs with The Raynor Group. I made a name for myself by acquiring it. So it’s no surprise that she recently opened a solo artist pop-up gallery, studio, and retail experience in West Chelsea. Sutton said she believes she is the first female artist to accomplish this.

Located at 550 West 29th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues, just a few blocks south of Hudson Yards and just north of the famous Gagosian Gallery. At approximately 5,200 square feet, it’s as expansive as it is chic.

hybrid workspace

Walking into an art gallery can feel very intimidating, but Sutton’s space was created to feel the exact opposite. “My goal is to set myself apart from other boring, traditional galleries in the Chelsea area, because I am an artist and not just a gallery operator,” explains the artist.

She has designed raw spaces that make you feel happy and cheerful, but also intentionally accessible. “While watching me in action, you can touch, feel and shop my various collections, including fashion accessories, table tops, tiles, rugs, prints, wallpapers and fine art, among others. The creative elements of my work and a behind-the-scenes glimpse into both the business elements.”

While Sutton’s original work isn’t cheap (her original paintings start at about $5,000), her other works are more affordable. This space will also allow the artist to display unique works such as Blatt’s Billiards and Her Table, which will be exhibited to the public for the first time.

artist in residence

In addition to using the space for work, Sutton is also very passionate about connecting with the community. “I’m in the studio almost every Monday through Friday, painting live while also working in real time with my team on photography, art, and even the general administrative side of the business. I also do a lot of work. We also host events and fundraisers,” she says.

The large square footage (especially for New York City) gives you the flexibility to do whatever you want in a space that fully integrates every aspect of your business. “This is a fully operational working art studio that needs to function and operate according to my creative needs. That is a top priority, but I want it to go beyond the average retail or gallery experience. , it’s also what makes a space dynamic and interesting,” says Sutton. “Imagine walking into a Chanel store and seeing Coco Chanel sewing a dress.”

This is also a full-circle moment for entrepreneurs. In 2020, Sutton built four luxury penthouses in the living space above the gallery. “Retail space is the last square foot we can still buy, but unfortunately it’s beyond our budget. But this is a really happy place for me, and I’m really grateful to be here for a while.” It represents a sense of accomplishment and accomplishment that is beyond anything I could have imagined when I started just eight years ago.”

what’s next

Sutton recently launched its first tabletop collection, which includes melamine plates, faux linen napkins, vinyl placemats and more. It wasn’t bad, but it sold out faster than expected. However, she hopes to have these products available again soon.

The artist recently launched another tile collection called Meta Collection using TileBar. This is currently on display in the gallery and a new collection will be launched in 2024 along with her first vanity collection.

2024 will undoubtedly be a big year for Sutton. Her tiles Her collection will be installed in major hospitality projects including the new Fairmont Hotel in Long Beach, Essex Her House in New York, Capital One Her Cafe, Puerto Rico’s El Her Conquistador, Kissaki She Miami is.

In addition to all this, the symbolic Maryouhana Resort The Anguilla hotel, which recently transferred management to Story Hotel Group, will collaborate with Sutton to create unique artwork, products and art programs for hotel guests this spring to celebrate its 40th anniversary. I plan to.
